WHY?
The Advent season is upon us and we are eagerly preparing for a celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Although the Bible does not give us the date of Christ's actual birth, Christians from all demonations celebrate it as December 25th. God never told us to celebrate Jesus's birth, yet we do so for many several reasons. First, why do we have birthday celebrations for our own children? To celebrate the gift of life that God gave us when they were born. With Christ, we celebrate his birth for the same reason, but we believe there is more to it. Christ is Immanuel, God With Us, the Word that Become Flesh, the Savior of the World—his is the most significant birth ever. We celebrate Advent as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.
Beginning on December 1st, each day, we look at a Bible verse with our children, we discuss the verse, and then do an activity to really solidify the text. We do one verse a day, however small, it is very intentional to our teachings. We believe that our children need time to comprehend the topic, to ask questions, to investigate on their own further, and then to firmly cement the lesson through an activity. Not all activities are elaborate, but they are meaningful because each child has created something through their eyes. There is no wrong way to do an Advent activity and some are WAY more creative then I am.
Feel free to use our ideas or build on them and make them your own. We are blessed to have life and breath to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Merry CHRISTmas!
